At the core of the NIHR Newcastle MIC's service is: medical research excellence; the availability of large, well-characterised groups of patients and access to tissue and blood samples held in our biobanks.

Our aim is to provide a smooth, fast, responsive system that is attractive to IVD companies of all sizes, which leads to a far greater proportion of high quality, cost-effective diagnostic tests entering the NHS for patient benefit.

The NIHR Newcastle MIC works with technology developers addressing unmet clinical needs with a focus on our three clinical themes

  • Ageing and long-term chronic conditions (led by Dr. James Frith, Senior Clinical Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine)
  • Infectious diseases (led by Dr. Ashley PriceConsultant in Infectious Diseases and Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust)
  • Stratified (personalised) medicine (led by Prof. Nick Reynolds, Director of the Newcastle Molecular Pathology Node)
